CYLC 2024 Honorable Mentions

Although these people missed one or more check-ins, they still get an "Honorable Mention."

 From Kim Baier:

This year, finally, I hope to finish my castle library room box. It’s been a very slow go -- several years in fact.

From Joan Barnes:

This will be my first year doing the Miniature Challenge. I haven't worked on my miniatures, since I relocated from Illinois to New Jersey in 2021. My challenge is to complete (The Potter House, 1:24 scale), first time working in 1:24 scale. I also plan to start on the 1:12 scale (The Abilene House), once I complete the Potter house by September. I purchased the houses in November at the Philadelphia Miniature from "Little Vintage Lane Miniatures". I do not have a picture of the Abilene, because its still in my car, yes, since last November.

From Jene Bondi:

My next project will be my insane asylum, called Twilight House Safe Place for Peculiar People.  It will have a waiting room, reception/nurse office, padded cell and a "treatment" room. Maybe even a glimpse into the "cold storage". I've been percolating this idea since 2021.

Dropped out May 22, 2024. I'm going to bow out of the contest for 2024. My basement has flooded 9 times in under 7 weeks (last one 2 days ago) the miniature room is a hot mess and nothing is where it's supposed to be and I'm helping clean out a hoarder house.

From Cindy Bottasso:

I’d like to complete Robin Betterley’s 2023 calendar club. Of course I’m missing some of the months so I will also be reorganizing my crafting room to find them or recreating new drawers with my own furniture.

From Jennifer Brodeur:

Here is the photo for the project I have chosen for the CYLC 2024. The Adobe House was my very first miniature project, purchased in January 2020. Not really knowing what I was doing, I became overwhelmed and put it away to work on smaller projects. It's time to finish it, once I find where I put all the pieces!

From Mandi Burt:

I am going to try again this year but with a smaller project I bought and want to do but can't seem to get to. I bought it in Chicago (it was sold out & our wires got crossed and it never got sent to me) and didn't even pick it up until Philadelphia! But I really want to do this one. Hopefully this year is going to be  calmer for me and I can do miniature projects!!

I am going to complete my Pickett Hill house and interior. I have all the furniture kits bagged and separated into their rooms and have started some of them. If I can, I will work on the landscaping (bonus).

March Update:

I’ve been working on putting the furniture together. It’s just really satisfying when the pieces of wood all come together and I’m left with a marvelous piece of furniture. I just sit and marvel at it for awhile. 😊 Nothing is painted because that is my sticking point - what colors to use and how to use them - (those suggested or tweaking things just a bit.). I plan on having all the furniture complete and painted/stained by next update. Fingers crossed.

From Lori Ebiner:

I'm calling this challenge my "Elephant in the Room Goal". A couple of years ago I purchased a box of miniatures from an estate sale. When I arrived to pick up the one box I found out that it was four boxes plus this huge house! My goodness, as a newbie to mini's this "guy" is a little overwhelming and has sat watching me from the spot I put him ever since bringing him home. My goal is for the first time get him out where I can really look at him....make a plan...and get started! I hope to have this house fixed and painted on the outside. Inside, I'm worried that having it finished will be too much. Hopefully I'll have it cleaned up, and in move in condition. Ok.... I said it... Fingers crossed!

I'm happily here to show my progress as of March on "Lily House". (She has a name!) I decided to take her one floor at a time. Far from done on this first level but, I've placed new doors and windows, wallpapered, and am working on the floors and trims. I'm really happy with the new kitchen windows and the French doors in the study. I've placed some furniture just for fun for the photos. I know I'm working a little haphazardly but that's just me.

June Update:

I’ve been so busy with other projects I haven’t had much time to work on my own. I picked my plant shed as one of my projects for this year because I thought it would be easy to finish. The grass was cut to size, the sidewalk was in, exterior already painted, so just glue the grass down and add my stuff. And I already have plenty of finished plants. Easy. WRONG!
I started by sorting through all the things I’ve saved to go in it, about 10 times more stuff than would ever fit. First I painted and finished the interior. Found a lovely bench in my stash so needed more yard space for it to fit. Moved the building to the left. Had to chisel out the sidewalk, recut grass sheets, make new sidewalk, and make sure I allow room for the plexiglass cover. Discovered I don’t have the right plants so will need to make them. Noticed the front and sides of the building are different colors -- how did that happen? So changed to a cream color, but paint is too thin. So much for my quick project!

I followed the Challenge 2023 with a big interest and decided to participate in 2024 Challenge hoping it will help me to finish my projects.

My first project is a room box that I call "Half Way Done". When I saw this structure at $5 at the antique store, I knew it will fit the idea I have been carrying in my mind for a while.

My second project is a retirement resort for dollhouse miniatures enthusiasts. I put the Real Good Toys display showcase together in December 2023 and am ready to start working on it in 2024.

A friend who was downsizing gave me these display kits. There are three kits which can be configured for 1-4 sections each. I have several collections in my closet which will be used to create museum style rooms. I’ll be starting with “A Museum of Yesteryear” and a museum room for “China”. I’ll use an entire kit for my Egyptian collection. The last box is being planned as a “Tribute to Disney” box. Thank You for continuing this Challenge!

March Update:

I am determined to finish my challenge this year but I have been totally consumed with our State Day this quarter. I don't have any progress pictures this quarter.

__________________________________

June Update:

My CYLC is to complete three display boxes by FINALLY getting my collections sorted and displayed so I can enjoy them. The first box was divided into two triangles: China & YesterYear.

The collecting of Chinese pieces started in 1992 when I visited Hong Kong on business. The screen along the back, the small jade dragon, the pink and green jade ducks, and the sword (actually letter opener) on the wall were purchased there. Later when I visited San Francisco’s Chinatown and DisneyWorld’s Epcot, I purchased additional things. There are also some pieces I purchased in mini shops or received from friends. I never knew what I wanted to do with them until I received the display boxes from my friend Mary Neely.

CYLC2024

The second half of the display box is a “YesterYear” collection. Some of the pieces were made by myself or my husband (Martha Washington sewing cabinet, sewing table and ice box). Most of the pieces were originally owned by Pat Hartman who downsized her collection. (I was the lucky person who helped her pack for the move.) Those pieces include the spinning wheel, the manual printing press, the 2-person butter churn, the apple press and the cabbage shredder. I need to do signage for this collection plus I want to make additions to the scene, a basket of apples for the press, cabbages for the shredder, sewing basket, etc.

I’m so happy that you are doing another CYLC! I was sad to miss it last year. I have been so busy working on renovations for other people, that I haven’t devoted much time to my own. I have had this house for a couple of years and haven’t done anything with it! As you can see, it’s a storage shelf at the moment! I am planning on some changes in its structure, as well as remodeling inside and out with a ‘70s theme. I’m hoping quarterly reporting will keep me on track and motivated.

Not much progress this quarter. But she’s cleared out, cleaned, and lead tested before I sanded. (I didn’t once on an old house and it was lead!) I took the upper windows out and I think I am going to do some structural work. I took the fireplace wall out and now it’s sagging a bit, so I may need to put some other support on the first floor.

From Jeffrey Ritter:

I am submitting as my year long challenge the completion of this 3 building, nine room Amsterdam townhouse project. This project is the selected project for the Carolina state Day event on April 24, but I may need more time. I WILL need more time. The scale is 1:48.

I have watched several documentaries and films about Rembrandt and Vermeer, and we had a recent exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art on those painters and their peers. So, the upper rooms will be completed as if they are the art studios of 3 different artists, adorned with the props and garments found in a famous painting -- so it looks like everyone stepped away for lunch. On the center floor will be a servant's room, a prep room (with pigments, canvases, and stuff), and a fancy owner's bedroom. On the main floor will be a kitchen, two fancy rooms, a dining room, and an office.

CYLC2024

__________________________________

March Update:

The 1:48 Amsterdam houses are proceeding well. Nearly 3000 bricks hand-installed and all window shutters installed. Interior timbers installed. Doorways and stairwells cut. Stairways assembled. Stucco interior walls done. Stained wood floors installed for five rooms. Stone floor and parquet floor pieces for remaining rooms cut but not installed. The studio rooms (all from the Dutch painter Vermeer) to be recreated have been selected. Ceiling timbers cut and stained. Cobblestone test moldings and painting completed.

All the interior furnishings and accessories have been selected and acquired. I hope to make as many as possible by hand--using the kits I purchased as templates with which to pattern, cut and assemble from my own wood.  Approximately 90+ furniture items, not counting pots, pans, books, flowers, serving dishes, easels, etc. Have learned how to paint miniature (shrink a paint-by-number and then complete under a magnifier!) and will try to do so with some of the great classics.

Much more to report but you said it needed to be short.

June Update:

I had a lot of disruptions this quarter but made progress, have constructed interior on 3 rooms, learned how to do cobbles (still need paint finishing) and made a lot of the interior objects I determined I cannot build by hand with my skill set.
