March 2023 Challenge Submissions

For March, our theme was the Pot of Gold at the end of the Rainbow. We asked you to either send in pictures of Irish themed miniatures or minis completed during a tough time.

Here are the beautiful submissions.

From Diane Fisher:

This is my Rising Sun Saloon, which was completed during the pandemic. It was a Quarter Connection project and was sooo much fun. It is now part of an entire western town.

From Evelyn Gumina:

The completed room is a BJ Miniature kit that I believe was from 2006. At that time, I was member of the Apple Seed Club of New York. The kit was lost among my stash. For me it was like finding a pot of gold. It kept me busy during the most scary period of Covid 19.

From Susan Richter:

My uncle, a truly magnificent artist, died suddenly, unexpectedly and tragically. A bit of time after his passing I took a class with Brooke Tucker. She had a contest to see who could outline the stained glass inserts the best. I won, and Brooke personally mixed the pink glass stain for me. I like to think that Uncle Denny was pleased.

From Debbie Colombo:

This was not made from a kit. I found this really cute cup and saucer in my travels somewhere and decided it would make a great container for a St Paddy's day scene. Everything was from my stash except for the leprechauns and the pot of gold that came from Barbara Meyer, and the sheep, on the right side of the cup, which a friend saw in Scotland and thought would look cute with my scene.

From Janet Swanson:

Here’s my completed pot of gold mistakenly found by mini gnomes outside my gnome house I made way back when. It’s traveled to 3 houses and is my lucky charm.

From Jackie Williams:

I had a hard time waiting three years to complete a miniature scene. Three NAME Day kits in this girl's bedroom. The roombox and wallpapers are from Liz West. Here are the bunkbeds, the armoire, and the desk from three long years of NAME Days.

From Jean Ellsworth:

I made this room in 2021 during Covid. It is one of my first 1:48 projects. After 46 years I finally went to this scale because I ran out of room. The banners on the back wall say "Happy Birthday, Petra". She is my Great Granddaughter and she turned 18 this year on St. Patrick's Day. This was made from a Karen Benson kit. It was really fun to make.

From Mary Johnson:

I'd like to share Lazy Larry Leprechaun who has fallen asleep on top of his pot of gold. With pipe in hand and his grand Irish hat he dreams of adding more gold to his stash. (But I think he needs to stop dreaming and do some work for his reward!)  I assembled and dressed this original doll kit (from the very talented Nancy Cronin). Lazy Larry is one inch scale. I enjoy this little character.

I am sharing a display that relates to both aspects of the March “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” challenge: This is an Irish theme and a miniature made during a challenging time. I am a proud member of the Wee Bees miniature group in Michigan. The miniature cottage is Irish Belleek china (with real shamrocks for scale), flanked by the traditional Irish/Celtic blessing (“May the road rise up to meet you….”). Both are reminiscent of my own Irish ancestry. The quarter-scale miniature bed, sofa, dresser and bookcase (decorated with green fabric) are from a quarter-scale kit by Debbie Young at Young at Heart Miniatures. I made these pieces during a challenging time last year (2022), when a rotator cuff injury made it harder for me to use my hands. Debbie Young’s Charleston kit included fabrics and furniture pieces pre-cut with a laser and ready to assemble. Even so it was a daunting task placing and gluing all of the pieces together. Looking at the kit, I was concerned that it would be too much for me to complete. But I knew that if I just got started, gluing one piece of the laser-cut fabric to the resin form at a time, that I could do it. Working one piece at a time, one day at a time, I finally completed the entire set. I hope that my experience will inspire others to take on a new challenge.

This was a market stall on 1/4 scale from Suzanne Larson-Tamburo. The little people are Wee Forest Folk.

Here are two of my favorite St. Patrick’s Day minis. On the left, is the Irish Pub Snippet from Petworth Miniatures. It was a fun little kit to build and it makes such a cozy little scene. Next to it, is a tiny book scene I created using a Secret Book Blank kit from Betterley Miniatures. Inside, I used three little leprechaun figures from mini-gems to create a fun little scene of them dancing about their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

From Mae Karoli:

Although I am not a fan of St. Patrick’s Day, I did make this scene with my miniature club, probably sometime in the 1990s.

Attached please find photos of my COVID project built June through September 2020. This is the Beacon House that I had purchased a while ago but worked
on every day for three months to keep from thinking about COVID.  It was a wonderful way to survive the beginning of the pandemic.

I'd like to submit my Fairies diorama for the March Irish-themed submission. In Irish Folklore, many people to this day believe in fairies and the idea that fairies can bring good luck and fortune. My fairy garden sits in a bookshelf and reminds me of the things I find important.

My granddaughter requested a Harry Potter Roombox (1/12” scale). It was a challenging & pleasant project during the Covid_19 Pandemic.

I broke my left foot and right ankle in Sept - it’s been a journey. I’m just starting partial weight bearing with a Walker! These are kits, but just complicated enough. Complete with all the stuff, but easy to deviate on days I felt more energetic. Small enough to use a tray while laid out and ankle elevated!

I'm sending you a mini made during a challenging time. I made a lot of minis over the last few years, but this is one of my very favorites. It's the Key Lime Pie stand from MiniCousins. Love it in real life, gotta make it for my mini life too!

Irish I'm not, but how about an Irish ☘️ pub? The kit is Petworth, the added features are mine.

Like so many others, Covid and the forced distancing from family and loved ones was particularly hard. Focusing on mini projects put me in a happier place and sending out texts of how “busy” I was keeping myself, always was answered with a smiley face emoji! The serenity of this room was a reminder that soon, rooms like this would soon be filled with long awaited visits from those we missed so much.

From Suzie Aguilar:

This was my first ever Zoom class thanks to the COVID lockdown. The 1/4” scale toy shop was taught online by Debbie Young. I was a great experience and I was able to easily finish the structure. The optional add-on Christmas Advent kits to furnish the inside didn’t get done until the next year which wasn’t an issue since the lockdown continued well into that year also. (The Santa was purchased separately but everything else came with the online class and add-on kits.) I am thankful to Create for initiating the Zoom method of classes. It is one positive, lasting thing that I feel COVID has given us. Zoom allows many more people access to classes that could not attend otherwise.

I also realized I did have one St Patrick’s themed mini. A few decades ago I made a themed mini table for each of the holidays using the orange juice can table covered with a tablecloth. This is the one for St Patrick’s Day.

About 10 years ago I started collecting tiny teddy bears to use in little scenes. I enjoy making all scales of miniature’s but the bears hold a special place in my heart. This bear has found the Pot of Gold but is happy to share it with friends.

This is Karen Benson's St. Patrick's Day kit from The Quarter Source's "Corners - Holiday Decor" collection. I completed the kit on March 2, 2021 and each March that it is on display, it warms the 1/4 of my heart that is Irish (and overwhelms the other 3/4 that is German) and honors my Irish grandfather. The Celtic knot, the shamrocks, the pot of gold, etc. are just such great details.
