February 2024 Challenge Submissions

For February, we asked you to send in a picture or two (no more, please!) of your workspace ... large or small -- we love them all! This month we are celebrating our workspaces. After all, we love where we create our miniature marvels ... even if it only a TV tray or small table ...

This month the Create Team sent in pictures of their workspaces -- big and small ... we love them all!

From Carolyn Eiche:

The picture of the room is of my "business" workspace which is in desperate need of a clean out and straightening up. It only shows the room through the doorway, not the whole room. I haven't done much working in their lately as I really haven't any orders or sales.

Workspace

The second picture is of my laptop worktable where I do most of my personal minis. I use that while sitting in my recliner with my feet up and during most Zoom sessions.

Here's my last minute submission. All month I had this delusion that I would clean it up before taking pictures. 😂 Oh well ...

Here's my workspace. It’s pretty small, but it works. Lots of projects have been made sitting at my dining room table.

We remodeled a one room schoolhouse to be my miniature workshop. I do spend a lot of time making miniatures in our house too but the schoolhouse is an inspirational place to create and display my minis. 😊

From Melody Petlock:

My workspace is a nice-sized Early Canadian wooden table. I am delighted my workspace now also includes Zoom time with other NAME miniaturists. My tools and things are in two towers of drawers and the supplies and mostly-finished projects are all over the house.

I’m desperately trying to dig out my work space! I’ve been going through the contents of a friend’s work room, getting ready for our State Day (Carolinas State Day April 13th), trying to finish the 2023 Betterley calendar club, and figuring out where I can work on my year long project. This is only part of the chaos! The rest of the room is even more of a mess!

From Sandra Tom:

I had to do some reorganizing and cleaning, but this desk is my workspace for now. When I get a house and a dedicated craft room, I plan on getting one of those “Create Room Dreambox” to organize my miniatures in. Yup, that’s a cut out Kleenex box to keep dust from getting into my clay roller. 😂

From Dia Crissey-Baum:

We started building our real house over 20 years ago, and never finished it. So, it’s kind of nice not having to worry about dropping paint on the floor, but it is hard to find those tiny little things that do fall.  Every. Single. Day. My elbows are a major contributor. Can’t find it?  Did it get glued to my sleeve? Probably.

I share the room with my daughter who does a lot of cosplay and is an amazing wig stylist. Its original plan was to be a display room for my minis, and a library, but we haven’t built the part of the house where the workroom is supposed to be. Maybe it’ll happen one day. I share what we call the Cat Bathroom (the litter box used to live there) with her Etsy pin shop too but most of the stuff is mine. I have managed to clean off my work area and get a light-colored cutting mat (for photographing my kit instructions) but it’s a constant battle with myself keeping any work surface clear. Hence the trouble with the elbows.

From Jodi St Pierre:

Here is my messy workspace. I found an old school art cabinet from an elementary school Art Room nearby. I painted the outside off-white, and added storage bins, plastic shoeboxes, and Dollar Tree hanging organizers to the doors. It came with some of the original bins, which are perfect for supplies. I used my label maker to show the contents of each bin and box. I am still organizing it a bit, but it is perfect for me ... and my small room that doubles as my home office for work. I also have a small table for work in progress (mostly 1:24 scale kits or individual 1:12 pieces for my childhood dollhouse.

Here is my work space. On the left are some kits I have built. Then a shelf of supplies, extra wood, tools, etc. On the yellow cabinet is some projects I am working on. A door of all seasons. On the right is my main work station. I stand up to do my minis so I wanted a high table. I am working on one of the little kits ... just making the furniture to use in another project.

From Lucy Antony:

It's a very small space to make very small miniatures! It's actually a child's IKEA desk. I make mainly 1:48 and sometimes 1:144. It's very cluttered as you can see, but it's my little sanctuary.

From Marilyn Hughes:

Here are my workspaces. One (the messy one, of course) is in my living room and where I do most of my work. The other is in a back bedroom where I’ll be running my laser cutter and keeping additional supplies stored.

From Mae Karoli:

I work on my kitchen table because it has the best light, a sturdy surface and is at a good working height for me. My trusty red rolling cart with the most used supplies is stored nearby and can be moved to the table. I need to keep things organized because that is where I eat my meals and do numerous other things. The second picture is in a spare bedroom where more supplies and gobs of kits are stored. Behind the rolling drawer units are plastic storage boxes containing souvenirs, tote bag favors, table exchange gifts, etc. from past houseparties plus more kits.

Here are two pictures of parts of my workshop. One is of my work table. The other is one corner of the workshop, showing power tools and pegboard. The other two walls have shelves, a rolling pegboard, and a mop sink. The floor is painted concrete, so it doesn't matter if I spill paint or glue or mineral spirits.

From Tam Wallace:

I had my mini supplies all over the place. I had 3 carts, 2 shelves, plus some assorted boxes. I hate disorder. So, when Create Room had a major awesome sale last November, I took the plunge. The table has a light over it (on the roof of the box) and is perfect for miniature work. And the totes that came with are perfect for holding my "in process" projects so I can keep everything together and the bits and pieces of mini parts so I can separate them and find what I need when I am finishing a scene.

(Editorial Note: Serious jealousy here but you have a cute, furry inspector!!!)

From Carolyn Knight:

This is my studio space, and I DO love it! When we moved here during The Pandemic, I originally had my eyes on taking over the shed outside. But, conceded that space would be better used to store outdoor toys, gear and tools. We originally planned this basement spot to be a “Rumpus Room”, where our late teen-adult kids could do homework and hang out with friends. When we suggested this, they looked at us both like we were 100yrs old -- maybe it was the phrase, “Rumpus Room”? LOL! -- and turned up their noses at the idea. Since Mr. K claimed the other side of the basement for his tools, I jumped at the chance to take over this whole space! Although it can get chilly in the winter, it’s more convenient to be inside the house, near a utility sink and bathroom. I use the other side of the room for card-making. I love coming down for a little escape, turn on the lights, tune in to NPR, and drift away in my crafting.

From Vicki Scidmore:

The patio room was my original workspace. I used to sit on the floor to work (you can see all surfaces are crowded-lol). During Covid I migrated to the den where I have a TV, computer, and big front window. Somehow I never left. I might go to the kitchen table or patio for some things but I now work on a tray table. Since I do mostly small scale or room boxes it works out fine although more and more tools are migrating into the den!

Here's my studio. It’s tough to photograph because it’s the attic room and runs the length of the house ... so it’s pretty long and wide. These photos are of the quilting/crafting side. The worktable was built for me by my husband. The top has a 72” x 36” cutting mat on it. It’s also on wheels so I can move it to vacuum under it :)

From Lynn Miller:

I eventually ended up at the kitchen table as a preferred workspace. The light is the best, and the atmosphere is pleasant. I can monitor food while I work, and there is a water source if I am painting. And the formica countertops (which I did not choose) don't care if I get a little paint on them because it comes right off. The breakfast bar allows me to stand and work, has room to lay out kits, or use my mini table saw. So I guess I will never get out of the kitchen! LOL!

My workspace is in the unfinished portion of our basement so that I can keep in-process projects on the work table. I keep most supplies clear plastic shoe boxes so that I can easily see what I have and have additional under shelf lighting, as well as magnified task lighting to overcome the fact that there are no windows.
