CYLC 2025 - Honorable Mentions

I plan to complete the living and dining areas of The Harrison from Greenleaf dollhouse that I purchased over three years ago.

March Update:

Since the Greenleaf Harrison dollhouse's exterior is Tudor Revival style, I decided to create a Tudor-style ceiling for the living and dining areas. I’ve also started working on the Tudor fireplace that will go in the living room. While I originally hoped to make more progress by now, I’m pleased to have made a solid start and to share this update for the first quarter.

My plan is to make a room book or book nook of a craft room that will show all the different arts & craft hobbies I've tried over the last decade or so since being physically disabled and unable to continue my past lifestyles (distance running and work/workaholic). I don't really have a starting point picture as I'm not using a kit. My goal is also to use as many supplies as possible that I have on hand along with upcycling recycling/trash.

Since the first quarter, I've added some paint and installed the side wall, front wall, and second floor. I have two projects for my challenge. The first is to finish the Name Day project from last October: The Three-Sided Vignette (originally the 2023 Name Day Project), which I am doing in steampunk, half-scale. (See Photo 1)

The second project is to begin my from-scratch Rhosgobel roombox, also half-scale. Rhosgobel is the house where Radagast the Brown lived in the movie, The Hobbit. (See Photo 2).

June Update:

My Rhosgobel project has once again been hijacked by a new one. Our local NAME ladies will be submitting projects to a local library in October, based on a book. I finally decided on Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, and then after finishing the fireplaces, decided I didn't like the floor and had to re-do it. Now my time schedule is WAY behind. The 2024 Name Day Steampunk Project remains unchanged.

I got too far behind with the Goldilocks & 3 Bears Cabin, and switched to a makeshift room box. Nothing went right (except for my first half scale cloth doll...so tiny!) The setup in the local library is tomorrow, so this is as good as it gets. I also finished the outside of the Bunny Burrow from Shaun Crawford's class a couple years ago, and will be taking that along with the Little Golden Book "Home for a Bunny." The Steampunk 3-sided vignette, alas, has still not changed.

Well, I enjoyed the CYLC for the most part last year, but I only got two of the six projects I picked out done last year. So, this year I’m going to simplify a little. I’ve got a bunch of Roundtable kits that have just been sitting around for a ling time, so those are on my list. The other thing is a stump house or fairy house I started last year. I’m the projects person for our mini club (Atlanta Miniature Society) and we thought we’d do some kind of fairy house, and this was my demo piece to show everyone how to make a house with concrete and fabric. Then we got distracted planning our retreat and haven’t done anything else with our fairy houses. I’ve got a little of the interior done but it has a long way to go. Hopefully this year will be a better year than last year and I’ll have plenty of time for minis!

I truly enjoyed the 2024 challenge. The logical step is to now take my Stephen King house structure and complete/furnish the interior … BUT I need to step back and do something else this year. I’m going OPPOSITE! 1:48 scale has fascinated me. I purchased a beach house kit that I want to do in the colors of Key West cottages. No dark and dreary vampire room. Bright colors inside and out. A bit quirky just like the wee artist that lives in it.

Kitchen and bathroom - I'm still deciding on the wallpaper, flooring and layout.  Decisions!! Decisions!!

Hello, I think these challenges are what keep me going....

From The Fresno Small Scale Inside/Outside convention of 2007, here are my winnings. A bag of stuff, some pictures of Brambly Hedge books, and a huge cupboard with some artwork. I'm not sure what I will do with everything, but willing to give it a try. From 2010 two very talented, Seattle/Vancouver BC, ladies, Georgia Matuschak and Lori Ann Potts made this kit, A Ladies Sewing Secretary. I think it is time that I tackle this project. Which I think will lead into a larger project as I get going. I found these projects as I was cleaning out all of my quarter scale stashes, although I kept a couple. I have more projects than I will get done, but that is the fun of miniatures.

I am trying again, but I am choosing something different for this year. I have been collecting those adorable Chinese miniature kits and I have picked 5 to do during the year. I am hoping I didn't pick too many, but I wanted it to be enough to be a year long project. I chose to do these as my project since I had promised myself I would work on these this year. The Magic shop in a Jar is about 1/4 inch scale, the others are closer to 1/8 inch scale. They have stuff to make for inside and I will be doing the insides, but I may change some of those provided out with other items made completely by me.

CYLC2025

__________________________________

March Update:

I have almost finished the first of my 5 kits I have signed up for.  This one is the Magic Shop.  The original kit is shown in a jar, but I turned that upside down to make it a dome.  I have made a bunch of modifications, some by choice and some due to mistakes!  I put the cash register artwork on wrong, so instead covered it with teensy nail art, gold stickers, no-hole beads, and a piece of brass wire.  I used my own rock and tile floor to replace the one in the kit so I could change the placement of walls and the cabinet.  I used some of the artwork included with the kit and replaced others with ones I found online.  I made additional items for in the window and in the cabinet.  I made the cabinet to have to shelves and a "glass" front.  I have put lights next to the door, in the cabinet, and at the top of the window.  I have put "glass" in all the windows.  I still need to get the top railing glued to the top of the "stairs" and the door, make the fancy knob at the top of the dome, and attach the USB power adapter with switch to the lights.  As soon as those are done, I will move on to one of the other four kits.

Here is the second of my kits that I signed up for the YLP with.

I mixed paint to match the buildings and painted all the laser cut edges (around the windows, etc.).  I sanded, glued, and painted the roof so that the seam would not be as noticeable.  I changed out and added items to make the scene my own, used my own lights, and added Molly, a lovely doll by the talented Pat H.

September Update:

I had finished the Molly Garden for the 2nd Quarter, but was then presented with the most perfect Molly doll, so I switched the dolls.

I was hoping to have the bagel bakery finished, but I had decided it needed lots of people. The structure is almost complete. I need to glue the front to the acetate sheet and both to the hinges. I then have to do the tops of the boxes (not included in the kit) and put the railings upstairs and on the stairs. The structure is almost all wired. I just need the upstairs light(s). I have completed all the furniture, but need to fill the book shelf upstairs. I have placed almost all the people in their locations, but only with pieces of glue dots (which is why some are leaning). I still need to finish painting the people and then permanently glue them in place.

Once I am done with the Bagel Bakery, I need to move onto the Magic School. I will try, but do not think I will get the fifth kit done.  I had no idea how much extra work I would put into each kit over and above the directions.

For 2025, I would love to finally start and complete a “standard Victorian roombox” by Goliath Miniatures that I won at the NAME Winter Wonderland conference in Indianapolis 2 1/2 years ago. I am imagining a contemporary art gallery in a quaint touristy town with a Victorian storefront. I’ve been collecting things for years, but I need a place to put them! And then I will probably also create some artistic additions of my own.

No progress. It’s been a rough start to 2025. I did at least pick out the floor I want to use.  :)

September Update:

So it has been a slow going, but I have the exterior mostly completed along with the hand laid parquet floor (from Tom Walden).  Now I need to work on wiring and finishing out the exterior details. I also need to complete the interior molding. After the basics are done, I can start to put the art gallery together.

From Christiane Starks:

I decided a “Challenge” is just what I need to finish this lovely Robin Betterley cabinet. I keep putting it aside in favor of other projects! I plan to get together with two mini friends during the year (they need to finish their cabinets as well). Thank you for organizing this YLC!

My update for the second quarter is minimal. I am working on the little kitchen to the Secret Cabinet. My hands are not cooperating lately, so everything I do has to be slowed down - a true test of my patience. Thanks to my son, I started working with rubber tipped tweezers! They are fabulous for holding on to the tiny bits.

From Jodi St Pierre:

This 50+ year old dollhouse spent the last 30-ish years in the back corner of a garage (not climate controlled).
It was in use as a nursery for a squirrel family for a few seasons, and also suffered some water damage ... and the effects of time. For 2025, I hope to finish all the decorating and furnish inside and out!

From Leslie Swager:

My first plan is the Wonky house with the boat underneath. I got the kit 3 1/2 years ago but still have a lot to do as you can tell by the picture. The second one (in case I finish the wonky house) is a workshop from the Charleston, SC convention. I haven't done anything on it since I left there. I'm really planning on getting them done! I guess we will see!

From Julia Tchikine:

This year, I want to find a final layout for my dollhouse, set it up, and make progress on at least six roomboxes, and hopefully finish them! Making progress on more than six roomboxes would be nice, but six is my goal!

March Update:

It's been a very busy first quarter! I have found a final layout for my dollhouse (which is massive - 37 rooms - I have four finished :-D), and I have set it up. I have also made some progress on three roomboxes (shown in picture), and hope to continue this productivity in the next quarter!

June Update:

Unfortunately I haven't made as much progress as I would have liked on the six roomboxes this quarter. Ideally I'd have had one or two completed by now, but there is always next quarter! However, I have completed a lot of work on two of them, and I should have it done by the next quarter.

From Wanda Waterfield:

Figured I would jump in again this year and try and complete this house that I started to renovate two years ago. I had to move it out to the center of the room again to be able to access all sides of the project. Here goes!

It’s been a little crazy quarter.  We’ve sold our real house and are moving to a condo.  So only started a little work on my CYLC.

Started carving the stonework for the fence around the house.

From Celeste Wiley:

I've been trying to restore/remodel the dollhouse my father built for me 45 years ago. It languished in my parents' uninsulated attic for decades, which caused the glue to dessicate and the house to implode on itself. I brought the remaining pieces to my home last year but I've struggled to stay on track with the project. I feel like the Challenge would be a great way to motive me to stay on top of it. There is a lot to be done and my goal is to complete the entire first floor this year.

I'm attaching two photo collages. The first shows (clockwise from the top left): How the remaining pieces arrived, pieces precariously stacked to show what the house looks like, digital sketch showing what the front facade originally looked like, digital sketch of what the interior layout looked like. The second photo is the current state of the exterior and interior of the first floor.

From Marty Young:

This year I am going to work on my first project. This is a Hofco Victorian Farmhouse which I started many years ago. As Ron’s was closing, I purchased furniture and lighting in the sales. The outside needs refreshed after many years and then onto the windows and the interior. Should be a very challenging year!

All I managed to accomplish this quarter was to get sliders so I can move the house and cabinet around. Need to be able to move it so I can work on all sides. I also selected the paint so I can sand and repaint. Life got in the way this quarter. Next quarter I plan to do better.
